Hi name
It’s available in WordPress plugin directory at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/advanced-category-excluder/

Hi DjZoNe,
I use this plugin to put posts in 1 or more categories and decide which to show on the frontpage. I.e. I make reports of our journeys and also make a photo book. I want the journey to appear on the frontpage, not the photo book. Both posts are in the category “travel”. So I made a category called “frontpage” and just the report is in this category.
With version 1.03 I could exclude alle posts from showing on the frontpage, except the onse in de category “frontpage”. For some reason this (1.2) and previous versions, this doesn’t work anymore. When I exclude all categories, except “frontpage” from showing on the frontpgage, nothing is there.
Is the plugin messing up or am I?

Hello, I found a bug. Category names should be escaped for regex. For example, if the category names contain characters such as forward slashes, you get loads of errors in the category list. Here’s the fix.
In advanced-category-excluder.php, on line 193:
$p .= preg_quote($catData->cat_name, “/”);
Otherwise, well done!

Thank you for reporting this bug.
I released a bugfixed version.

Thanks for the update! One question: Does checking off the do not search box prevent internal searches only – or does it also prevent Google and external search engines from listing it?
July 18th, 2008 at 10:16
Santafelving, no it does not prevent the search engines to index you page.
But it is a great idea
July 19th, 2008 at 00:50
Excellent! (BTW, it should be an option, rather than universal).
July 26th, 2008 at 20:39
I was wondering if anyone can tell how to add more catagories on the advanced catagory excluder?
July 26th, 2008 at 20:47
It reads categories from the database, so you don’t need to “add more”. It will display, when you have posts in them, or, if you tick in the “Do you want the category lister, to list the empty categories?” checkbox in the main screen of ACE Dashboard.

Hi there, just to clarify, if i hide category from home page and also the category list so that nobody can see the posts will the search engine still index the entire site, so in other words no matter what settings i use in this plugin, search engines can always index full site, am i correct, thank you mick…
July 26th, 2008 at 21:06
Hi Mick,
Search engines will still index it, because, there are plenty of links, that could point on that post.
Few examples:
- sitemap
- related post plugin links
- navigation links (next, prev)
- tag list
- category list
- yearly archive
- monthy archive
- daily archive
- search result
For example I hide posts from my frontpage, but I left them is the RSS feed, that’s another way.

Wow djzone, that is a fast reply, sounds like a good plugin, the only thing i was concerned about was that the search engines might not find posts that i published and kept hidden on the site, can i just ask 1 more question please, sorry to sound so stupid but you are obviously more knwledgeable than me about these matters, if i hide the rss posts and rss comments will the search engines still index the site and find the posts, once again i am just clarifying, thanks mick.. P.S. maybe an instructions file with the plugin would be good for stupid people like me
Thanks Mick…
July 26th, 2008 at 21:25
Mick, it will be index.
If you care about search engines, generate a sitemap to be sure your site get into the index. There are great plugins available that does that.

Thanks for your patience, i will check out your plugin for a while and if it works good then i will definatley make a donation, if it’s as good as it sounds then it is very useful, thanks

Hi Mick,
I’ve looked into coffeebreak 1.0 theme’s source code. It seems it is using a deprecated function to generate the category list…
July 30th, 2008 at 10:23
Hi djzone, i cant seem to get it to work on any theme now, whenever i click on a normal post in my site the posts i dont want to show appear in the recent posts section, i cant get the plugin to work on any theme, any help is much appreciated because i really want to use this plugin

Hi there,
I tried installing the plugin. Removed an older version first. Now when I click on the ACE button on my Dashboard, it says the page cannot be found. Any idea how this can be?
Could it have to do with the other files included in the plugin? Because I followed the instructions which said I only need to upload the advanced-category-excluder.php, which is what I did…
Regards,
DM

Is there a way for me to hide specific categories, archive posts and pages from a specific main category? This is a family blog and I wanted each member of the family to have their own categories and coresponding sub-categories and archives on their pages without the rest of the families info. Just wondering if this could be done with your plugin or if you are aware of any other plugins that could do this.

Hi
Is there a way to remove hidden category posts from the “Recent posts” widget/list in the sidebar?
Thanks
January 13th, 2009 at 00:18
Hi Rebecca,
sure, just activate ACE widgets (under plugins), and use them instead of the original ones.
