Advanced Category Excluder 1.3 is here!

Add comments

Hey ;)

The next version of ACE has just came out. It contains main improvements, accodring to user requests, and it works with Wordpress 2.7. Well, nothing serious changed in the new WordPress release that would prevent ACE to work as epected, but it sounds great anyway ;)

First of all, you’ll notice a new option in the options tab. With this option you can set, if you only want to enble exclusion in the widgets. Of course it will have NO affect, if you are not using our bundeled widgets :)

Another brand new stuff will be in the sections. You’ll find a Disable robots section. If you check this, every post in the selected category will be hidden from web crawlers, even if All in One SEO pack is installed ;)

There are some improvements as well. You’ll notice, that now widgets works more than perfectly. Let’s say you are at your home page, and you have excluded a category from the front, and also from the widgets. You won’t see any comment to any post in that category, even if you go deeper, into the blog. But if you are listing that categories posts, our you are watching a post that is in that excluded category, suddenly your recent comments, and recent posts widgets will show you the entries related to those categories. Cute, huh? :)

I want to say a special thank you for those of you, who have contributed to this release, with translation, idea, helped people in my project blog, or with patch/code.

You are:

  • Aaron D. Campbell
  • Jean-Michel MEYER
  • Mikael Jorhult
  • philtre
  • costela

And finally I want to thank you for your donations, that makes me feel proud. Not because of the value of the money I’ve received so far, but for the fact, that my work has value, and totally foreigners takes the time and the effort to transfer me money, and support this project.
Thank you very much.

    Hello,
I have a suggestion for a new feature you may add:
I would like to hide a category from the “date” archives, but not from the “authors” archives. Is it possible to add a column for this section?
I think it could be useful!

Thank you for this plugin! Continue the good job! ^_^

  2. Dan Says:

“if you are listing that categories posts, our you are watching a post that is in that excluded category, suddenly your recent comments, and recent posts widgets will show you the entries related to those categories. Cute, huh?”

It’s cute, but it would be wonderful it if was optional. On the site I’m working on now, I use ACE to allow the content creators for the site to write in a consistent place, the post window, and then the content gets distributed to the right place according to the category. ACE allows me to keep a consistent separation between “true” blog entries and other types of content. The updated widget does a great job of that as well. EXCEPT that the widget changes completely when looking at certain content pieces. That’s a weird experience for a user.

    Please make this optional!

  3. Greg Says:

    Hi there,

I am totally confused and flummoxed by the three options on the first page:

Do you want the categories selected for Home section, to be hidden from category list as well?
Do you want the posts related to the categories selected for Home section to be only excluded from the sidebar widgets? (Recent Posts, Recent Commants, Calendar)
Do you want the category lister, to list the empty categories?

It isn’t clear to me if unchecked is a yes or a no. If these were in the form of statements indicating the state of checking, that would be helpful.

More, it would sure help if you could elaborate on what each of these things mean. A few sentences would go a long way!

Thanks, great plugin that saved a lot of work before I realized I needed to somehow exclude categories. Seriously, I don’t know what I would have done without it.

  4. DjZoNe Says:

    Hi Greg :)

Hm, then let me explain the 3 statements.

If you check the first one, the categories you selected for Home section will be remove from the Category lister sidebar widget.

If you select the second one, that will cause that your blog’s Home page won’t be affected, only your sidebar widgets.

The third setting, is an inside one, if you check that, you can select empty categories for exclusion in ACE Dashboard -> Categories subpage.

    I guess I’ll include some footnotes :)

  5. Tshering Says:

am quite to the WP platform and am learning. well will this plugin hide categories from fellow authors and contributors to the site. I am looking to restrict my site authors and contributors to some categories only n not all when they are posting an article or story. help appreciated.

  6. danieldamar Says:

that’s what i pray for u, ’cause ur plugin is helping people like me :)

  7. Be My Friends Says:

Page function link path not properly set.

Installed on WPMu and found link on sub menu didn’t worked correctly.

    I got this…
    http://kartolo.bemyfriends.com/wp-admin/advanced-category-excluder/main.php?page=advanced-category-excluder/pages/categories.php

    it should be
    http://kartolo.bemyfriends.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=advanced-category-excluder/pages/categories.php

    How to modify this?

  8. Shasoosh Says:

Thanks for a great plugin, is there a way to add more then one widget of “ACE Categories”. i want to divide my categories to subject and i want each one to show different categories.

  9. ulfben Says:

    Hi!

I’ve seem to have discovered a bug in ACE 1.3:
If you tag a post with the name of a category, this post will be excluded too.

    Step by step to reproduce:
    Create a category “foo”
File a post in “bar”, tag it “foo”.
Now exclude “foo” from ACE control panel

The post in “bar” will be get excluded – even though it’s not filed under foo.

    Hope this helps!

  10. John Says:

    Hello,

Great plugin. I have a couple things I’d LOVE to see.

First, the ability to sort categories (by something other than alpha).

The second would be AJAX expanding and collapsing of sub-categories.

That’s it… ;) Thank you for your hard work.

  11. Rohan Says:

This plugin may not work properly when used with category selection is made using Opera. The ‘Categories’ checklist has some problems. I got many orphan checkboxes. When used with Firefox, those orphan checkboxes disappeared the plugin worked as expected.

  12. Maxine Says:

Sorry but this plugin has completely broken since I upgraded to WP 2.7 and ACE 1.3. My ACE Category sidebar (News By Year, on the right) is now displaying a list of ALL my categories, when it is only meant to display about 7. I do not know what is causing the problem as it worked absolutely fine before.

  13. Chris Janton Says:

After activating any version of ACE starting with 1.2 I get the ACE menu in the dashboard which shows “Settings,Categories,Tags,Plugin homepage”. If I click on any item I get “That resource cannot be located”.

Turns out I used svn to get the plugin, and named the directory “ace” instead of advanced-category-excluder.

If I change the name of the plugin directory to advanced-category-excluder everything works as expected.

Just thought I would pass that along.

  14. Artemis Mendrinos Says:

    Another Idea:

Could we have enhanced category widget were you could specify to show categories from one specific parent category.

It would be nice to see it in the near future :)

  15. Vlad Says:

    Hi, Greg.
I made translation into Russian for your plugin.
    Are you interesting in it?

  16. Juno Says:

I have tried out this plugin unsuccessfully in the past. So I’d like to know if the utility I need is included now.

Excluding the posts of a certain category from RSS has worked fine. However, what I also need to do is to make sure that the comments to posts of a certain category are excluded from the Comments RSS feed.

So far I have discovered no method to ensure this, apart from disabling the Comments RSS completely.

So I’d like to know if the new ACE reliably excludes the comments to a certain category of posts from the Comments RSS.

    Thanks!

  17. Patrice Says:

    Very useful and good plugin.

For your information, i’ve found a bug that makes me trouble with the side bar widget (some categories were not hidden even if excluding from the ace config).
    - advanced-category-excluder.php – line 189 :
    for($j = 0; $j <= count($rows); $j++ )).
    Should be replaced by :
    $max_count_row = count($rows);
    for($j = 0; $j <= $max_count_row; $j++ )

This avoid re-evaluating the count($rows) at each loop step.
It is critical as the unset ($rows[$j]) decrements itself the $rows length, and then the loop was not completed.

  18. benwaynet Says:

Where is the settings for ACE in the new 2.7 admin layout?
    Thanks,jb

  19. btp Says:

Thanks for this plugin. A small bug: I upgraded to 1.3.1, and it went fine but the ACE widgets still says it’s version 1.3 and is nagging me to update the widgets. The widget files in the 1.3.1 look the same as what I’ve got up there (1.3), maybe you just need to fix the rev number on the widget part of the plugin?

  20. DjZoNe Says:

Patrice, thank you for this code. I’ll include it in the next release.

benwaynet, It’s a standalone menu, somewhere under Settings main menu.

btp, thanks. I’ve just updated it.

  21. Jason Says:

    Hey just one question,

What I want to do, as I’m told this plugin can, is to post on my wordpress blog’s different PAGES. For example, Technology page = technology post, Health page = health post. How do I do this with your app. Thanks.

    J

  22. Anteck Web Design Says:

I agree with Dan. Why did you make the ‘cute’ feature without the option to choose it or not? Not everybody wants to show things this way. This is a real deal breaker for me.

  23. DjZoNe Says:

    Anteck Web Design,
Why do you BLAME me, instead of politely ASK to modify this?
Do you really think blaming works?

  24. Anteck Web Design Says:

Where’s the Blame? I’m saying, i find it strange you would introduce a new feature which changes the plugins functionality.

It’s great you’ve written the plugin, and it works well (which i appreciate), but changing it’s functionality when it’s upgraded to a new version which dramatically changes the way it works seems slightly strange.

  25. DjZoNe Says:

    Dan & Anteck Web Design,
Check out the latest developement version of ace (the version is the same). At the settings you’ll find a function called “smart exclude”. If you _not_ check that, the widgets will behave like before. It will be included in 1.3.2 as well.

This is just for you ;)

Patrice, I also included your suggestion in the latest developement version.

  26. Anteck Web Design Says:

Thanks dJZoNe – Thats awesome! I can now use the plugin again! – i’ll slip u a donation next payday.

  27. Anteck Web Design Says:

Sorry, but the plugin seems to behaving exactly as before. Also, whatever i try i cannot get it to exclude categories selected for exclusion from the widget. I just want the sidebar to exclude whats selected for exclusion all the time. I’m using WP 2.7, with this latest version, and the ACE Recent post widget.

  28. DjZoNe Says:

    I’ll check this out.

  29. DjZoNe Says:

    Anteck Web Design,
in 20 minutes it will be ready I guess. I’m completely rewriting that part.

  30. DjZoNe Says:

It took longer, than I thought, but finally, the soultion is ready. The new developement is called 1.3.1.1.

    Download it here:

  31. EvilMammoth Says:

    Hi DjZoNe,

Great plugin. It achieved, for the most part, what I’d been looking to do.

One question, though. When I exclude a category from the homepage, it also removes postings under that category from the Recent Posts widget on the sidebar.

I just wanted to remove the posts themselves from the homepage but still have them listed in Recent Posts. (I should mention they are only removed from Recent Posts while on the homepage, not on secondary pages.)

Is there a way to achieve this result?

Thanks again for the plugin and for taking the time to look this over.

  32. DjZoNe Says:

EvilMammoth, maybe you should try to use the original WordPress widget for that, or wait till the next release, which will have an option for no exclusion in the widgets.

  33. EvilMammoth Says:

Ok, thanks for taking a stab at it. Keep up the good work. I’ll be waiting for the next release.

  34. DjZoNe Says:

Well, you can try out now, the developement version called 1.3.1.2. It has that feature already.

  35. Rebecca Says:

    Hi
I have created some links and a new link category to assign to them, but that category doesn’t appear in the list ACE category list so I can show or hide those links.
Is it possible to control those?
    Thanks

  36. DjZoNe Says:

    Rebecca,
to tell the truth, I’ve never even thought of managing link categories with ACE :)

  37. Rebecca Says:

Can you make something like that? I won’t insult your obvious intelligence and talent by trying to flatter you into doing this.

But it would be extremely handy to be able to show and hide link categories. Even better if it could be according to member level.

  38. Eva Says:

I really like this plugin but would also appreciate it if this new widget-feature was optional. Ive got a categoy which shall be excluded on the frontpage but not in the recent comments, and I dont see a way to realize this at the moment. Can you help me?

  39. DjZoNe Says:

    Eva,
you can use the original recent comments widget in this case.

  40. Eva Says:

I do use the original, but it does not work the way I described!?

  41. DjZoNe Says:

Then I don’t understand your problem.

You said “Ive got a categoy which shall be excluded on the frontpage but not in the recent comments”.

So, you should use ACE Categories widget, and the original wordpress recent comments widget, if that’s what you want.

  42. LISAOH Says:

I think this plugin is exactly what I need… I have a category called “Source”- I don;t want the post in this category to appear on the home page. However, when I click source on the ACE page and save, my home page looks like this: that is, none of my posts appear.

    Any ideas?

  43. baron Says:

    hi. Thanks for plugin

    perfect.

    Regards

  44. Wellington Says:

    Hi!

Great plugin. Have you experienced somo incompatibility with Sidebar Login Plugin?

I can’t use both plugins… Anyone that could help me, send me an email (wjdemelo@gmail.com) Thanks!

  45. DjZoNe Says:

Wellington, thank you for reporting that, I’ll investigate this case.

  46. Rebecca Says:

    Hi DjZoNe

Did you know that when you’re in a single post view, the back and forward links at the top of the page still display links to posts in the hidden categories?

  47. DjZoNe Says:

    I knew that.
    It’s a kind of a known issue.

  48. Drew Says:

DjZone, love the plugin and I may be doing something wrong but I have all the boxes checked and am using the Gazette Edition of WP and I want the drop down menus of my subcategories to not show up on the drop down displays. ACE made all categories without posts disappear but for some reason it is not excluding the ones with posts. Can ACE do this or am I doing something wrong. If this works, I’l be happy to donate to the plugin because it is a must needed tool you have come up with.

  49. Drew Says:

Ah, I think I figured it out. I had that post in multiple categories and since some of those were not chosen to be hidden it left that category in the drop down. Nevermind the previous post. Will be donating soon, thanks again for the plugin!

  50. Drew Says:

Just finished making a small donation. Hopefully if things go well I can contribute more to all the WP plugins that I use. Take care and I look forward to newer versions of ACE.

  51. Will Says:

hello, got the plugin to exclude certain categories on the sidebar category widget on the homepage, but when i click on a post or page, the sidebar widget will still show ALL categories.. any help?

  52. Richie Says:

I seem to have a problem which noone else has or possibly I’m missing something obvious…The plugin doesn’t appear in my dashboard at all after I activate it. It appears as a widget in the widget section but it is nowhere to be seen in the dashboard. Any ideas?

  53. andy stevenson Says:

First, I have to say. This is one of the best SEO plugin tools that exists on Wordpress. The opportunity to create focused link groups and pure silo effects gives users a real edge when targeting keywords for search.

However I have a small problem. I have 7 categories I want to exclude for my widget link. No matter what I try, I can only get the widget to exclude completely 4. In view ‘posts’ everything works fine, when I open a ‘Page’ I get 3 extra categories that I don’t want to display? If I change the categories I want to hide, I still get 3 extra categories, but this time different ones? Any ideas. Do I need to increase something?

  54. tiresias Says:

Please could we have an option to set/reverse order in the ACE Recent Posts widget.

    Many thanks

  55. Tina Cowden Says:

I have the exact same problem as Andy Stevenson above. i am only able to hide 4 catagories and that’s it. this is a fantastic plugin!! Wondering if there’s a setting somewhere that I can change to allow more catagories to be hidden. Thanks.

  56. Belajar Seo Says:

great tool…but i have not try it yet..i’ii try it and if i get some bugs i’ll tell you.thanks.

  57. Fry Says:

Hey, Tina Cowden and Andy Stevenson – see Patrice’s comment (#17) for the fix. But, it was line 185 in my copy, not 189.

Thanks for a great plugin! Now that it’s excluding all the categories, not just 4, it’s peachy.

  58. Kategorie im Feed ausschließen Says:

[...] geht dies auch mit dem ACE Plugin von [...]

  59. Four Pillars Says:

This looks like exactly what I need. I want to exclude certain categories from going on the RSS feed.

Problem is – I have the plugin installed but there is no “ACE” menu in my wordpress dashboard menu. Any ideas?

  60. Four Pillars Says:

Just ignore the last comment – it was a permission problem.

  61. Silicon Gadget Says:

I have the exact same problem of “Four Pillars” except I do not see any permission difference on the ACE plugin folder compared to any other plugins permissions (looking on ssh connection).

  62. Otis Kilmer Says:

Hi, I was just wondering that when we scroll down to the end of the page on any Wordpress home page and click the navigational link ‘Previous Posts’ and go to Page 2 from there, the excluded category posts are visible. So perhaps it just works on the page 1 or the front page. Any idea how to solve this.

    Thanks, Otis
